THE JOURNEY

Summit, Recover, and Then the Plains

Kilimanjaro and the northern safari circuit sit within an hour of each other. The combination makes logical geographic sense and creates a journey of striking physical contrast: six days climbing through alpine zones to 5,895 metres, a recovery day in Moshi, then five days at low altitude watching elephants and lions from a private vehicle.

The Machame Route is the standard route for this combination, seven days on the mountain with strong summit success rates and genuine scenery across multiple climate zones. After descending, a full rest day in Moshi allows the legs to recover before the safari begins.

The safari component follows the northern circuit: Tarangire for elephant density, Serengeti for open plains, and Ngorongoro Crater as the final destination. Both parts of the journey are fully private and guided by specialists, a Kilimanjaro guide for the mountain, a safari guide for the plains.

DAY BY DAY

Journey Itinerary

Thirteen days: 7-day Machame Route climb, 1 rest day in Moshi, 5-day northern circuit safari. All timing is precise around your departure.

Day 1 Arrival in Moshi & Briefing
+
KIA → Moshi (1 hr)DMoshi hotel
Transfer to Moshi. Gear check and climb briefing with your mountain guide team. Everything for the climb is reviewed and any missing equipment arranged from local rental. Early dinner and an early night.
Day 2 Machame Gate to Machame Camp
+
Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,000m)Mountain tent campBLD
Drive to Machame Gate. Register, meet the full crew, and begin the climb through montane forest. The first day is the most sheltered, dense vegetation, bird calls, and a 5–6 hour walk to the first camp at the forest edge.
Day 3 Machame Camp to Shira Cave
+
Machame Camp (3,000m) → Shira Cave (3,840m)Mountain tent campBLD
Exit the forest into open moorland. The Shira Plateau opens up to wide views across the plateau and west toward the summit. A longer day with a steady climb through heather and groundsel.
Day 4 Lava Tower Acclimatisation
+
Shira Cave (3,840m) → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco (3,900m)Mountain tent campBLD
The acclimatisation day. Climb high to Lava Tower for altitude exposure then descend to Barranco Camp. The Kilimanjaro protocol, climb high, sleep low, is most clearly applied here. The evening at Barranco below the Great Barranco Wall.
Day 5 Barranco Wall to Karanga
+
Barranco (3,900m) → Karanga Camp (4,200m)Mountain tent campBLD
The Barranco Wall is the most technically engaging section of the Machame Route, a hands-and-feet scramble with no fixed ropes required. Not dangerous but requiring full attention. Karanga Camp beyond.
Day 6 Karanga to Barafu High Camp
+
Karanga (4,200m) → Barafu Camp (4,673m)Mountain tent campBLD
A shorter day to high camp. Rest in the afternoon is critical. Summit attempt departs at midnight. Crew confirm conditions, gear is checked a final time, and an early dinner is followed by sleep as early as possible.
Day 7 Summit Night & Descent
+
Barafu (4,673m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)Mountain tent campBLD
Midnight start. Six to eight hours of steady walking in darkness to reach Stella Point on the crater rim then Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. Sunrise from the summit. Descent all the way to Mweka Camp, a long but celebratory day.
Day 8 Final Descent to Moshi
+
Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate → MoshiMoshi hotelBLD
Short forest descent to Mweka Gate. Certificate and crew celebration. Transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower, a proper bed, and a celebration dinner.
Day 9 Rest Day in Moshi
+
Moshi recovery dayBDMoshi hotel
A full rest day in Moshi. Sleep, eat, and recover. Optional Materuni coffee farm and waterfall walk if legs are willing. The safari begins tomorrow.
Day 10 Transfer to Tarangire
+
Moshi → Tarangire (2.5 hrs)BLDLake Burunge Tented Lodge (mid)Tarangire Treetops (luxury)
Drive to Tarangire. The physical contrast is immediate, from glaciers and altitude to baobabs and elephant herds at 1,000m. Afternoon game drive inside the park.
Day 11 Tarangire to Serengeti
+
Tarangire → Serengeti (4–5 hrs)BLDSerengeti camp (mid or luxury)
Transit through the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti. Late afternoon on the open plains, after six days on the mountain, the scale of the Serengeti hits differently.
Day 12 Full Day in Serengeti
+
Central SerengetiBLDSame camp
A full Serengeti day. Game drives at your own pace. No altitude, no packs, no schedules. This is consistently described by post-climb guests as one of the most satisfying recovery days imaginable.
Day 13 Ngorongoro Crater & Departure
+
Ngorongoro → Arusha → KIABL
Transit to Ngorongoro for a sunrise crater descent. Full morning on the floor. Picnic lunch inside. Afternoon drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.
Want to add Zanzibar for a three-part Tanzania journey?Kilimanjaro, safari, and Zanzibar is Tanzania's definitive combination. A domestic flight connects the safari to the coast in approximately 1 to 2 hours, depending on routing.

WAYS TO SHAPE THIS JOURNEY

Optional Experiences

These additions are commonly combined with the Kilimanjaro and safari journey. We arrange all logistics seamlessly.

Lemosho Route (8 Days, Higher Success Rate)

Lemosho is the best Kilimanjaro route for acclimatisation. Two extra days on the mountain significantly improve summit success rates. We recommend Lemosho for guests prioritising the summit.

Hot Air Balloon, Serengeti

A balloon safari during the post-climb Serengeti day adds a spectacular aerial perspective to the plains experience. Popular with post-summit guests.

Zanzibar Beach Recovery

After Kilimanjaro and safari, 4 to 6 nights on the Zanzibar coast completes the Tanzania experience. The beach is an exceptionally good physical recovery after the mountain.

Materuni Coffee & Waterfall, Moshi

A half-day cultural excursion from Moshi on the rest day. A short, low-altitude walk through coffee plantations and to a waterfall. Good for the legs.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About This Journey

The questions asked most often by guests considering this itinerary.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for this combination?
The Machame Route (7 days) is the standard route for the combination journey. For guests prioritising summit success, we recommend the Lemosho Route (8 days), which provides better acclimatisation and consistently higher success rates. Both connect naturally to the safari circuit.
How fit do I need to be?
Kilimanjaro does not require technical climbing experience, but it demands physical endurance and the ability to walk 6 to 8 hours daily for 6 days at altitude. Good aerobic fitness, a prior hiking background, and realistic expectations about high-altitude discomfort are the most important preparation factors.
What is the summit success rate?
On the Machame Route with a 7-day itinerary, experienced operators achieve 85–90% summit success. The Lemosho Route (8 days) pushes this above 90%. Success rates decline significantly on 5 or 6-day routes, which we do not offer.
Is the rest day in Moshi necessary?
Yes. After descending Kilimanjaro, your legs, lungs, and mind all need a full day of recovery before starting the safari. Guests who skip the rest day consistently report that the first safari days feel more exhausted than they would have hoped. The rest day is one of the best investments in the overall experience.
What gear do I need for Kilimanjaro?
Layered warm clothing, waterproof shell jacket and trousers, good hiking boots, sleeping bag rated to -10°C or below, headlamp, and trekking poles are the essentials. We provide a full kit list and can arrange rental in Moshi for anything you do not already have.
Can we add Zanzibar after the safari?
Yes. Zanzibar is the most popular three-part combination: Kilimanjaro, safari, and Zanzibar beach recovery. A domestic flight from Arusha to Zanzibar takes 90 minutes and connects all three components into one seamless Tanzania journey.
