Tanzania Safari Cost Guide

What a Tanzania
Safari Actually Costs

Tanzania is not a cheap safari destination, and we would rather tell you that directly than have you discover it during an inquiry. This guide breaks down every cost driver so you can plan a realistic budget before reaching out to any operator.

The Short Answer

A private mid-range Tanzania safari costs from USD 350 per person per day. Luxury starts at USD 650. The biggest single cost driver is not the operator margin. It is government park and conservation fees, charged per person per night and non-negotiable. Understanding where the money goes before you inquire makes every conversation more productive.

Local Perspective

"The guests who are least surprised by safari pricing are those who understood park fees before they arrived. When you know that Serengeti alone costs USD 70 per person per day just to enter, the rest of the number makes sense."

What Drives Cost

Why Safari Prices Vary So Much

The range between a budget group safari and a luxury private fly-in journey can be ten times the price. Understanding what each level actually buys helps you decide what matters most and plan a budget that reflects those priorities.

Park and conservation fees
are the largest fixed cost. Set by the Tanzanian government, non-negotiable, and charged per person per night inside each park boundary.
Accommodation tier
is the second biggest variable. A basic tented camp and a premium tented lodge can differ by USD 400 or more per person per night for a very similar location.
Private vs shared vehicle
makes a substantial difference. Private vehicles give complete flexibility over pace and stops. Shared vehicles reduce cost and remove that flexibility entirely.
Domestic light aircraft
between parks adds significant cost but removes two to four hours of driving per transfer. On a ten-day safari the time saving is worth serious consideration.
Season
affects camp rates by 20 to 40 percent between peak and green season. The wildlife experience changes but does not disappear in the low season.
Itinerary length
affects the per-day average. Longer itineraries spread fixed costs and sometimes unlock better accommodation combinations.
Government Park and Conservation Fees

What the Park Fees Actually Are

Every operator charges the same park fees because they are set by TANAPA and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. They are not negotiable and they are not markup. A six-night northern circuit passes through three or four parks, and the cumulative fee is a substantial part of the total cost.

Park / Conservation AreaFee Per Person Per NightNotes
Serengeti National ParkUSD 70Applies to every night inside the park boundary including mobile camps and permanent lodges.
Ngorongoro Conservation AreaUSD 70 + crater feeSeparate crater descent fee of USD 70 per vehicle per descent applies in addition to the conservation area fee.
Tarangire National ParkUSD 53Significant for multi-night stays, especially dry season when the park is at its best.
Lake Manyara National ParkUSD 53Often visited as a day trip or single-night stop, which limits total fee exposure.
Nyerere National ParkUSD 50Southern circuit. Lower fees than northern parks with boat safari access and a remote setting.
Ruaha National ParkUSD 50Tanzania's second largest park. Lower fees, fewer vehicles, one of the least-visited wilderness areas in the country.

Fee rates as of 2025. Subject to change by TANAPA and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. All fees are quoted in USD and included transparently in our proposals.

Accommodation Tiers

Budget, Mid-Range, and Luxury Compared

The most significant variable in a safari budget after park fees is accommodation. Understanding what each tier delivers helps match expectations to spend before booking.

Safari accommodation tiers from budget to luxury in Tanzania
Budget Safari
From USD 200 per person per day

Basic tented camps or lodges, shared vehicles with other travellers, fixed meal times, and limited flexibility on timing and stops. Suitable where the priority is wildlife rather than the camp experience.

  • Shared vehicle, fixed group departure times
  • Basic tented accommodation, shared facilities
  • Standard meals, limited customisation
  • Fixed itinerary, less flexibility at sightings
Mid-Range Private
From USD 350 per person per day

Private vehicle and guide, comfortable permanent tented camps with en-suite facilities, full board, and the flexibility to extend sightings and adjust the day's rhythm. This is what we operate for most guests.

  • Private 4x4 Land Cruiser, experienced local guide
  • Comfortable permanent tented camps, en-suite
  • Full board included, good food quality
  • Your schedule, your pace, extended sightings
Luxury and Premium
From USD 650 per person per day

Premium tented lodges and bush camps, private fly-in transfers between parks, elevated food and service standards, and the best-positioned camps in each region at the right time of year.

  • Premium lodges or exclusive tented camps
  • Fly-in transfers between parks where available
  • Private game drives, exclusive bush experiences
  • Best camp positioning for season and wildlife
Private vs Shared Safari

Why We Operate Private Vehicles Only

A private safari gives you and your group your own vehicle and your own guide for the entire journey. No strangers, no compromises on timing, no waiting for other passengers before the vehicle moves.

On a mid-range northern circuit, you might pay USD 100 to USD 150 per person per day more for a private vehicle. What that buys is complete control over every day on safari. We consider it the most important single decision in safari planning.

  • Stay at a sighting as long as you want without group pressure
  • Depart for morning drives at the time that suits you
  • Adjust the itinerary in response to wildlife movement
  • Work with your guide one-on-one, building the day around your interests
  • No noise, no strangers, no compromised photography angles

Worth Knowing

For solo travellers on a tight budget, shared vehicles are available with other operators. We suggest comparing what the shared rate buys in terms of camp quality and itinerary flexibility before deciding on price alone.

Domestic Flights and Logistics

The Domestic Flight Decision

On a standard northern circuit, driving is practical. The distance from Tarangire to Ngorongoro is two to three hours. Ngorongoro to Central Serengeti is three to four hours. These are manageable travel days and the drives pass through interesting landscapes. Flying becomes more relevant on longer journeys or when connecting to the southern parks.

When driving makes sense

  • Standard northern circuit with two to four hour transfers between parks
  • Itineraries where the drive passes through wildlife areas
  • Budget-sensitive journeys where the flight cost is better spent on an extra night
  • Guests who want to move through the landscape progressively

When flying makes sense

  • Moving between Central and Northern Serengeti (three to four hours each way by road)
  • Southern parks where driving from Arusha is a full day or more
  • Short itineraries where every hour of driving costs a proportionally larger share of the trip
  • Combining northern and southern parks in one journey

Seasonal Pricing

How the Season Affects What You Pay

Camp rates in Tanzania follow wildlife season, not calendar months. Understanding the pricing windows helps you find the best balance of cost and experience for your travel style.

Peak Season: July to October

The highest rates of the year. River crossing season in the northern Serengeti drives significant demand from July through October. Book well ahead and budget at the upper end of the tier you are considering.

Shoulder Season: January to March

Calving season in the southern Serengeti draws demand but not at the same level as peak crossing season. Good rates, extraordinary calving activity, and far fewer vehicles than peak.

Green Season: April to June

The lowest rates of the year. Camp rates drop by 20 to 40 percent. Parks are quiet, landscapes lush and dramatically lit, birdwatching at its peak. June is a genuine sweet spot before peak crowds return.

December and Christmas

Rates spike around Christmas and New Year to near-peak levels. If your window includes that week, budget accordingly or shift dates by a week where possible.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Safari Cost

Why does a Tanzania safari cost so much?

The largest cost is government park fees set by TANAPA, non-negotiable and charged per person per night. Serengeti is USD 70 per person per night. Add accommodation, a private guide and vehicle, all meals, and domestic transfers and the daily rate reflects genuine costs, not inflated margins.

What is included in the daily rate?

Our daily rate includes park fees, private vehicle and experienced guide, accommodation and all meals at camp, and game drives within the park. Domestic flights, optional experiences such as balloon or walking safari, international flights, and gratuities are priced separately and clearly quoted in every proposal.

Is it cheaper to travel in the green season?

Yes, by 20 to 40 percent at most properties. Green season (April through June) brings lush landscapes, quieter parks, and excellent birdwatching. The wildlife experience does not disappear in the green season, though roads can be more challenging in April and May.

Can I get a cheaper safari by booking last minute?

Occasionally, but rarely for the camps and windows you want most. Peak season camps in the northern Serengeti book out six months ahead or more. Last-minute availability tends to be in less desirable positions or periods. Booking three to six months ahead is more reliable.

What are gratuities and how much should I budget?

Gratuities for your guide and camp staff are customary and expected. A standard guide tip is USD 15 to USD 25 per day. Camp staff tips are typically USD 5 to USD 10 per person per night distributed to the team. We share detailed guidance with every guest before departure.

Do prices change for solo travellers?

Yes. Solo travellers pay a single supplement at most camps, typically 50 percent of the shared rate, and bear the full private vehicle cost alone. We build solo safari costs transparently and can suggest itineraries and camps that minimise single supplement exposure.
