Zanzibar Planning Guides

Three guides covering the island's different regions, how it works as a beach extension after safari, and Stone Town's cultural significance. Considering a dive-focused extension instead? Mafia Island is a separate destination south of Dar es Salaam, not part of the Zanzibar archipelago. Want something quieter within the archipelago itself? Pemba Island is the less-developed island north of Unguja.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Common Planning Questions

The questions that come up most often from guests in the early stages of planning a Tanzania journey.

When is the best time for a safari in Tanzania?
The primary dry season from June to October offers the most reliable wildlife viewing with animals concentrating around water sources. January and February are excellent and less crowded. The Great Migration timing varies by location within the Serengeti, so planning by region produces better results than planning by month alone.
How much does a Tanzania safari cost?
A private Tanzania safari typically starts from USD 500 to 700 per person per day for mid-range, and USD 900 to 1,500 or more for luxury. The main variables are accommodation level, group size, number of parks, season, and whether the safari is private or shared. Our cost guide explains each variable in detail.
Do I need climbing experience for Kilimanjaro?
No. Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek with no rope work or exposed climbing. Good cardiovascular fitness and mental preparation matter more than technical skill. The key to summit success is proper acclimatization, which is why we recommend 7-day or longer itineraries over the shorter options that compromise on acclimatization time.
Which Kilimanjaro route is best?
The Lemosho Route combines the best acclimatization, quieter trails, and exceptional scenery and is our general recommendation. The Machame Route is the most popular and slightly more affordable. The Northern Circuit has the highest summit success rate. The right route depends on your time available and how much space you want on the mountain.
Which Zanzibar beach is best for swimming?
Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast are best for consistent swimming at any tide. Paje and Jambiani on the east coast have significant tidal flats and swimming is only possible at high tide. If easy ocean access at any time of day matters to you, the north coast is the right choice. Stone Town works best as a day visit rather than a beach base.
How do I combine a safari with Zanzibar?
The most natural combination is 7 to 10 days of northern Tanzania safari followed by 4 to 6 days in Zanzibar. A domestic flight connects Arusha to Zanzibar in approximately 1 to 2 hours, depending on routing. We handle the full transition: transfers, domestic flight booking, luggage coordination, and making sure both parts of the journey feel connected rather than bolted together.
