THE JOURNEY

A Private Safari Built Around Your Family's Pace

Family safaris work best when they are private. Your own vehicle means you leave and return on your schedule, stop when the children are engaged, and move on when they are not. A shared group vehicle cannot offer any of this. It is the single most important decision in planning a family safari.

This journey follows the northern circuit with extra breathing room: two nights in Tarangire for a relaxed introduction before the scale of Serengeti, two full days in the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater as the visual finale. Lodges are selected for family-friendly facilities, open spaces for children between drives, and an atmosphere that feels adventurous rather than resort-like.

Tanzania is an extraordinary destination for families. The scale of the wildlife encounters, elephant herds in Tarangire, lion prides in the Serengeti, the entire crater ecosystem visible from a single point, creates experiences that stay with children for the rest of their lives. We plan the pacing to keep everyone engaged without exhaustion.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

A Typical Journey

The sample below shows a typical 8-day family circuit. Extra rest days, slower game drives, and later start times are built in wherever they suit the group.

Day 1 Arrival in Arusha
+
KIA → ArushaDinnerFamily-friendly Arusha lodge
Private arrival transfer. Dinner together and an early night. If you arrive in the morning, Arusha town or the Cultural Heritage Centre work well as light half-day introductions.
Day 2 Tarangire: First Safari Day
+
Arusha → Tarangire · 2.5 hrsBreakfastLunchDinnerLake Burunge Tented Lodge (mid)Tarangire Treetops (luxury)
The safari begins. Tarangire is ideal for families: hundreds of elephants at close range, towering baobabs, and well-maintained game drive roads. A bush picnic inside the park works well with children of most ages.
Day 3 Second Day in Tarangire
+
Tarangire National ParkBreakfastLunchDinnerSame lodge
A second Tarangire day. Children who were reserved on Day 2 are often fully engaged by the morning of Day 3. The scale of the elephant encounters has time to register. Pool afternoon at the lodge if needed.
Day 4 Journey to the Serengeti
+
Tarangire → Serengeti · 4–5 hrsBreakfastLunchDinnerSerengeti family lodge
Travel through the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti plain. Children typically find the transit itself part of the adventure. Wildlife sightings begin along the route. Arrival for an afternoon game drive.
Day 5 Full Day in Serengeti
+
Central SerengetiBreakfastLunchDinnerSame lodge
A full Serengeti day. Cheetah, lion, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest are all reliably seen. The guide adapts the experience to the children's age and engagement. Bush picnic on the plains or return to camp depending on energy.
Day 6 Serengeti to Ngorongoro
+
Serengeti → Ngorongoro · 4 hrsBreakfastLunchDinnerNgorongoro highland lodge
Journey east to the Ngorongoro highlands. The change from open savannah to cool forested escarpment is dramatic and visually striking for children. Early arrival for a relaxed highland evening.
Day 7 Ngorongoro Crater Safari
+
Full day on crater floorBreakfastLunchDinnerSame lodge
The crater floor is one of the best family safari destinations in Africa. The concentrated wildlife is accessible across a compact area. Lions, elephants, hippos, and black rhino often visible in a single morning.
Day 8 Return to Arusha & Departure
+
Ngorongoro → Arusha · 3 hrsBreakfastLunch
Return drive with an optional Lake Manyara stop. Afternoon departure from Kilimanjaro Airport.

WAYS TO SHAPE THIS JOURNEY

Optional Experiences

These additions can be built into any version of the family safari. We adjust the pace and timing around the group.

Materuni Coffee & Waterfall

A half-day cultural excursion from Moshi on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes. Coffee farm walk and waterfall hike that children of all ages enjoy. Works well as a pre-safari Day 1 activity.

Maasai Cultural Visit

A respectful community engagement near the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Organised with a local guide and community rather than as a staged stop.

Zanzibar Beach Extension

The Zanzibar north coast is calm, safe for swimming, and easy for children. A domestic flight connects in 90 minutes. One of the most popular additions for families.

Night Drive (Selected Areas)

Available in private conservancy areas adjacent to the Serengeti. Encounters with nocturnal predators not available in standard parks. Suitable for children aged 10 and older.

BEST TIME

When to Go

Family safari timing follows the standard circuit logic with one addition: school holidays. We book family safaris year-round but school holiday windows fill earliest.

July to October, Best Wildlife, School Summer
JulyAugustSeptemberOctober

Dry season with excellent wildlife viewing. Aligns with European and US school summer holidays. Book accommodation well in advance.

December to February, Festive & Warm
DecemberJanuaryFebruary

Warm and largely dry. January and February offer calving season in the Serengeti. Works well for Christmas and half-term family travel.

March and June, School Half-Term Windows
MarchJune

Quieter parks and slightly lower rates. Green season landscapes in March can be striking for children. Good for families with shorter holiday windows.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About This Journey

Questions asked most often by guests considering this journey.

What is the minimum age for children?
We recommend 7 or 8 years as a practical minimum for national park game drives. Children need to remain seated and quiet in the vehicle during drives. Younger children can work well with a patient guide and a private vehicle, but the experience is more limited below 6 years.
Are the lodges genuinely family-friendly?
Yes. We select lodges based on family room availability, safe outdoor spaces for children, and an atmosphere that works for mixed-age groups. Several lodges we use also have swimming pools, which matter more for families than for adult-only groups.
Can the circuit be slower for younger children?
Yes. Late starts, rest afternoons, and shorter game drives are built in wherever the group needs them. A private vehicle means no pressure from other guests and no fixed schedule. The guide adapts the day based on how the family is feeling.
Can we combine this with Zanzibar?
Yes. The north coast is one of the best beach extensions for families. Calm water, easy swimming, and a complete change of scenery after the safari. A domestic flight connects in 90 minutes.
Is there a maximum group size?
A standard vehicle comfortably seats 6 guests. For larger families, we arrange two vehicles, which also allows older children and adults to travel separately if preferred.
What is the best season for a family?
July to October is the most popular family window due to school summer holidays and the best dry season wildlife. January and February are excellent alternatives with fewer vehicles and strong wildlife.
