A wooden sailing dhow, the kind that has worked this coastline for centuries, carries you out as the sun drops toward the water and the island slips into silhouette behind you.
Dhows have carried people, spices, and goods along the Swahili coast for hundreds of years, and a sunset cruise on one is as much about the boat itself as the view. Built from local timber with a single triangular lateen sail, the dhow moves quietly under wind power, with the gentle creak of rigging and the slap of water against the hull the only real sounds once the engine, used only to clear the harbour, is cut.
The route varies by departure point, but the rhythm is the same: an hour or so of easy sailing as the light begins to change, drinks and snacks served on board, and a slow turn to face west as the sun drops toward the horizon. Zanzibar’s coastline, palm trees, dhow silhouettes, and sometimes Stone Town’s skyline, fades into deep orange and then violet as the boat heads back toward shore in the last of the light.
It is a low-key evening, well suited to couples and small groups, and works equally well as a standalone Zanzibar evening or as the closing scene of a longer safari and beach journey.
A genuine sailing vessel, built and crewed in the local tradition.
Timed to be on the water as the sun drops toward the horizon.
Refreshments served on board as the light changes.
The engine is used only to leave harbour. Sailing is silent.
An intimate setting, well suited to honeymoons and quiet evenings.
A relaxed way to end any Zanzibar day, with nothing required of you.
Dhow cruises run throughout the year. Departure times shift slightly with the tide and the season’s sunset time, and your hosts will confirm the exact schedule on the day. The driest months (June to October and December to February) generally offer the clearest sunset skies.
