Overview:

A 6 days trek is strongly recommended on this route by our team experts as it allows one day of acclimatization at Horombo on the third day.

The Marangu route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest, most well established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations in lieu of camping. Despite the route being considered to be the easiest route up Kilimanjaro, a good preparation is required for a successive climb. Unlikely other routes, Marangu being the only route where soft drinks, mineral water, chocolate bar & beer can be purchased at the camps but trash-in trash-out is closely observed.

Amazing Gallery Expeditions offers Marangu route as five or six day private climb. The five day variation does not have an acclimatization day on day three at Horombo Hut.

Below is an example itinerary, all our programs are flexible and tailored to the individual groups so please let us know if you would like to make any changes. The day before your climb you will receive a full briefing from our climbing team, all your equipment will receive a final check and we will be able to answer any of your questions.

Day 1 Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

In the Morning our Mountain Guide & Crew support will arrive and meet you up at the hotel for a quick briefing and after you will be transferred by a vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park’s Eastern entrance: Marangu Gate (1,860 M). Here, your head guide arranges all necessary permits and registration for rescue and search services before you start hiking towards Mandara Huts at 2,700 M. The trail takes you through the rain-forest with its high probability of rain showers, a raincoat is advised.

This being your first day at high altitude we strongly recommend the following:

  1. Abstain from taking any caffeine or alcohol.
  2. Drink often, at least an intake of 3 liters per day from time to time.
  3. Ensure to take Diamox for relief from altitude sickness symptoms. It is usually taken in the morning before the day’s climbing. Consult your physician before undertaking the trip to check for possible contraindications.
  4. Heed your body’s warnings and promptly inform your guide of any adverse symptoms.

Acclimatization-associated discomfort is common at night when your body gets less oxygen than during the day. This is normally expressed in the form of nausea and headaches.
