7-DAYS TREKKING KILIMANJARO VIA MACHAME ROUTE + 3-DAYS BEACH VACATION

OVERVIEW

Machame Route

Many say this is the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro; your efforts will be rewarded with a unique scenic splendor that is not seen on the other commonly traversed routes. This route is often referred to as the “Whiskey route" is better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker. Unlike the Marangu route, in which you sleep in huts, you will sleep in tents on this route. However all your equipment and supplies will be carried up the mountain by our friendly porters and delicious meals will be made for you each day.

Most climbers choose to use 6 days to climb but our team experts strongly recommend 7 days to climb on this route (an extra day for acclimatization). Acclimatization is the key to success with this mountain and on this route we climb high to the lava tower (4,630m) on day three and then come back down by nearly 700m to overnight, this helps you to acclimatize even better.

The day before your climb you will receive a full briefing from our climbing team, all your equipment will receive a final check and we will be able to answer any of your questions.

Zanzibar Islands

Zanzibar best known as the Spice Island is a true paradise and utter bliss on the pristine Indian Ocean. This area boasts amazing marine life with endless beaches with turquoise waters and coral reefs in the North and West side of the Island. In the Southeast are continuous waves, favored by surfers and dolphin watchers. Visitors can enjoy tasting exotic fruits and spices at legendary spice farms, exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Stone Town, meet the impressive tortoise on Prison Island – some with over 150 years or simply take a deep relaxing massage and a sundowner drink on the fine white sand beaches.

Below is an example itinerary, all our programs are flexible and tailored to the individual groups so please let us know if you would like to make any changes.

Arrival Day

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). After passport control, our friendly driver will be waiting outside the arrival lounge carrying a signage with your name on it ready to drive you to your Accommodation in Moshi (Approx 40 – 50 minutes). Enjoy a great meal and a relaxing evening before starting your Adventure on the next day.

Accommodation: Hotel/Lodge in Moshi

Day 1 Machame Camp (3,010 M)

In the Morning our Mountain Guide & Crew support will arrive and meet you up at the hotel for a quick briefing and after you will be transferred by a vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park’s entrance: Machame Gate (1,800 M). Here, your head guide arranges all necessary permits and registration for rescue and search services before you start trekking up towards Machame Camp (3,010 M).

This being your first day at high altitude we strongly recommend the following:

  1. Abstain from taking any caffeine or alcohol.
  2. Drink water often, at least an intake of 3 liters per day from time to time.
  3. Ensure to take Diamox for relief from altitude sickness symptoms. It is usually taken in the morning before the day’s climbing. Consult your physician before undertaking the trip to check for possible contraindications.
  4. Heed your body’s warnings and promptly inform your guide of any adverse symptoms.

Acclimatization-associated discomfort is common at night when your body gets less oxygen than during the day. This is normally expressed in the form of nausea and headaches.

Change in Elevation: Machame Gate (1,800 M) – Machame Camp (3,010 M)
Hiking Distance: Approximately 5 Km
Hiking Time: 5-6 Hours
Habitat: Rain-forest

Day 2 Shira Camp (3,845 M)

After breakfast you will start trekking up to the second high-altitude camp, Shira Camp (3,845 m). On this day you will emerge from the rain-forest and for the first time be able to see stunning views of the Shira Plateau laid out just in front of you. Physically speaking, the trekking is not very difficult, but you may feel the changes in altitude, so pay attention to your body and remember that choosing the proper pace is extremely important for good trekking. When you reach the camp, you will have lunch and some rest, from there the group will go on an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp with a 300 meter gain in altitude. Back down at Shira Camp you will be served a hot dinner and get some rest for the night.

Change in Elevation: Machame Camp (3,010 M) – Shira Camp (3,845 M)
Hiking Distance: Approximately 5 Km
Hiking Time: 4-5 Hours

Day 3 Barranco Camp (3,960 M)

The route now turns East into a semi desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower. Before lunch you will climb a rocky scree path to the Lava Tower (4,630 M). This will probably be your hardest day so far and some climbers may begin to feel the altitude. However our experienced team will coach you through the symptoms and provide you with all the advice and support you need.

After lunch you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). Here you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness! The next day you will be climbing it, but don’t worry: it features a very simple hiking trail.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 11 Km
Hiking Time: 6-8 Hours
Habitat: Semi – Dessert

Day 4 Karanga Camp (4,035 M)

Your day begins by tackling the awesome obstacle of the Great Barranco Wall. Whilst initially an imposing site, its climb is invariably easier than anticipated. You will quickly appreciate how beautiful the mighty Kilimanjaro is when you reach the bottom of the Heim Glacier. You will then head down to the Karanga Valley. This is a short walking day, but we recommend doing a short acclimatization hike to the scree below the glaciers in the afternoon.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 5 Km
Hiking Time: 4-5 Hours

After breakfast, you begin your way up to Barafu Summit Camp (4,640 m). Our team will set up a camp for you ahead of time, including tents and sleeping bags, so you can relax. After regaining strength, you have to complete an acclimatization climb towards the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp with its highest point being 4,800 m and then back to Barafu Camp, where you will be served a hot dinner. It is better to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before night summiting.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 6 Km
Hiking Time: 4-5 Hours

Day 6 Uhuru Peak (5,895 M)

At around midnight you will be awoken to some light tea and biscuits and will make a move into the night from Barafu Camp (4,640 m) towards Uhuru peak (5,895 m), the highest point of Africa. The trekking will be moderate from a physical standpoint, but the altitude presents a much more serious problem. For the entire length of the trekking each pair of climbers will be accompanied by their own guide, who will be monitoring your stamina and mental resolve.

After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then you will return to Barafu Camp, here you will have a well earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Millennium Camp (3,820 M).

This last camp’s position being far lower at the forest line will afford you a good night’s sleep further enhanced by thoughts of having reached the top. Breakfast will be followed by the return to 1,650 m at the final point in this adventure; Mweka Gate. Here you will receive your certificates; those climbers who reached Gillman’s point (5,681m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receive gold certificates. After, you will be transferred back to your hotel for relaxation.
